Organic

Organic farming strictly limits the use of artificial chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Antibiotics for animals are also kept to an absolute minimum.

There are several organic organisations each with their own set of standards. Whilst they concentrate on limiting the use of chemicals (both directly in the form of antibiotics and also indirectly through feed which has been grown using chemical fertilisers) they also include guidelines on welfare standards.

The European Union provides a standard, which involves the right to label food as organic.

This standard means?

The pigs have spent some of their lives outdoors?
Pigs have spent all of their lives outdoors?
Pigs must have access to an outdoor area ?
Pigs must have access to grass/soil?

Note

British organic standards are higher than the European Standards. However it is thought that in the UK, 50 % of the organic pork sold by multiple retailers is imported!
